41st Division returned to France from Italy in early March, 1918. where they became part of Fifth Army just in time to face the German onslaught, Operation Michael, which began on 21st March. 23rd Middlesex of 123 Brigade, along with many other units of the division, suffered severe losses during the last week of March and in early April they moved north to Ypres where they spent the rest of the month working on the defences there under the supervision of the Royal Engineers. On 26th April they took over the front line near Potijze in the northern sector of the Ypres salient. Although this sector did not come under attack when the Germans launched their second Spring offensive, Operation Georgette, in Flanders, there was always some action taking place and on 30th April, Alec Stephens of 23rd Middlesex was killed, probably as a result of shell fire.
